Dengue is a global problem with an estimated 100 million symptomatic cases worldwide every year.1 Endemic throughout the tropics, this disease is expanding into the subtropics in the geographic footprint of its mosquito vectors, principally Aedes aegypti. This acute disease that presents with syndromes ranging from undifferentiated febrile illness to circulatory shock from vasculopathy, hemorrhage and organ dysfunction is caused by four closely related but antigenically distinct dengue viruses (DENV1–4).
